  1. Great review – definitely a classic. When you combine this with Romero’s “Dawn of the Dead”, you really have a potent social statement on modern humanity’s spiritual crisis. Have you seen “Dawn of the Dead”? The final surviving humans are doing battle with rampaging zombies in an enormous shopping mall – a brilliant setting to show consumer society consuming itself. Perfect double-bill to bring in the Apocalypse.

  2. I totally agree on your review. Another Zombie film that I like is The Last Man On Earth with Vincent Price. I preferred it to Omega Man and I Am Legend (which I had trouble sitting through). Although Last Man is a bit slow moving, and didn’t have the same kind of social relevance, I felt it was great at telling Richard Matheson’s story.

  3. The film was recently restored by Criterion ( https://www.criterion.com/current/posts/5043-night-of-the-living-dead-resurrected ), and a Criterion Blu-ray is strongly believed to be in the works. The Blu-ray that just came out earlier this month was NOT from the new restored print, but from an old, crappier-looking print, and it was released just to cash in on Halloween. The new restored version was made from the original negative, and George Romero raved about it. So wait for that one to come out instead, probably late 2018, which will be the film’s 50th anniversary.

  4. On the DVD audio commentary, the filmmakers said they had no political motives and just wanted to make a horror flick on a low budget. That might be true, but all the subtext you mentioned is definitely unmistakable, and is a nice bonus to our enjoyment of the film whether the filmmakers intended it or not.

  5. To be fair, you have to have a very high IQ to understand her. The commentary is extremely subtle, and without a solid grasp of pop culture, most of the review will go over a typical listener’s head. There’s also Maggie’s nihilistic outlook, which is deftly woven into her characterisation – her personal philosophy draws heavily from Narodnaya Volya, for instance. The fans understand this stuff; they have the intellectual capacity to truly appreciate the depths of her videos, to realize that they’re not just reviews- they paint a broad viewpoint. As a consequence, people who dislike Maggie truly are idiots, they wouldn’t appreciate, for instance, the humour in Maggie’s existential catchphrase “I ramble on about movies and a few other things. Some people listen on occasion” which itself is a cryptic reference to Turgenev’s Russian epic Fathers and Sons. I’m smirking right now just imagining one of those addlepated simpletons scratching their heads in confusion as Maggie’s videos genius unfolds itself. What fools… how I pity them. And yes by the way, I do have an Undercover lens tattoo. And no, you cannot see it. It’s for the ladies’ eyes only.

  6. Thought you’d like to know that the actor who played Ben was the best actor George knew. Colour did not come into it according to him. But the impact of an African American protagonist and that ending cannot be overestimated. Because I’m a bit odd, Day of the Dead is my favourite Dead movie, but without Night of the Living Dead, we would have no zombies as we know them today. Great review of a true classic.

  7. I think this still holds up so well because its message isn’t lost in a lot of modern special effects and over the top action. It focuses on the situation and the how the people in it deal with it and keeps things simple. It also felt relativity real, as in the way people behave and react to things. There are no hero’s to save the say ;] Keeping with the Halloween zombie theme have you seen Return of the Living Dead? It’s an 80’s classic and although its not as layered in symbolism as NOTLD its written and directed by Dan O’bannon (Alien fame) and has a similar feel in that the characters behave realistically and the situation is desperate. It also coined the popular “brains” idea for zombies and has a fun dark sense of humour to it. Keep the great reviews coming!
