India election: Counting underway after 642 million people voted | BBC News

Votes are being counted in India after the world's biggest election was held in seven phases over six weeks with hundreds of millions of people voting.

Early trends show Prime Minister Narendra Modi's BJP-led NDA alliance is leading in nearly 300 seats.

Most exit polls had suggested a comfortable win for Mr Modi's party, which is eyeing a rare third consecutive term in power.

However, the opposition alliance INDIA is performing better than expected and is ahead in more than 200 seats.

A party or alliance needs to win 272 seats in the 543-member parliament to form the government. Results are expected later on Tuesday.

  1. BJP lost majority.
Opposition is very closely inching to Majority.
Modi lost majority for the first time in 25 years.
From 2002 till 2014 he enjoyed power as CM with full majority.
From 2014 to 2024 he enjoyed PM post with full majority.

  2. What this so called writer said
    1. Uttar pradesh is not the largest state in india
    2. UTtar pradesh has 80 seats and he said 25% of seats come from uttar pradesh but the total seats are 543
Come on BBC get some real educated people instead of some fake accent arses

    • why are you seeking validation from foreigners ? that shows how incompetent you are yourself India has a robust electoral process that is transparent and efficient unlike banana republic of USA where voter fraud is ubiqutous and poltical oppression is regular so be proud of your Election Comission body that its so transparent and doesnt bow down under any government in power.

    • Exactly. There’s apparently something wrong with opposing an ideology that treats women as second-class people, does not have a proper definition for a child, praises a horrible murderer and really does not like gay people. There are good aspects, but they are grossly overshadowed in my opinion.

    • And that is from anywhere in the world! They promote an ideology that is inhuman. That seeks to destroy everything that civilization has worked to build up over the centuries! Clearly, there is a nest of vipers at the heart of the BBC. Not even the Brits like or trust them anymore!

  3. I don’t understand BBC’s anti-Hindu stand. They have a Pakistani descent woman reporting for BBC from Delhi on Indian elections. What do you expect her to say about Hindus?

  4. Modi:- Am interested in Religious and
    communal politics.

Public:- Sorry. We are not interested.

    Modi:- I will build temples😭😭

Public:- No. Temple can not feed us.We
    need food.We Choose
    DEMOCRACY, HARMONY,
    BROTHERHOOD, DEVELOPMENT,
    PEACE
