iPhone 5 Announcement Leaves Tech Reporters Dazzled or Underwhelmed

The new features of the iPhone 5 can be summarized in a matter of seconds — longer, 4-inch screen, thinner, lighter body, sturdier aluminum back, faster processor, and a possibly obnoxious new dock connection — but perhaps the most interesting result of the latest sermon from the high priests of Apple is the wide range of responses the iPhone 5 rollout generated among the techno-razzi.

Gizmodo featured a rundown of major tech sites generally praising the phone for its upgrades, even as most of those sites simultaneously seemed to be running pieces somewhat criticizing the latest version. The gist: the iPhone 5 is a fine enough upgrade, but Apple is slowly but surely losing its wide margin of quality over Android and Windows competitors.

On Slate, Robert Cyran offers praise for the phone's "subtle and sublime charms", while Farhad Manjoo roundly criticizes the new, still Apple-proprietary dock, under the headline, "No, this isn't the best iPhone ever". If it was, Manjoo writes, "it wouldn't have screwed over Apple's most loyal customers."

So take your pick of reviews.  Apple hopes that your keeping-up-with-the-Joneses envy will make you buy one anyway.

What do you think?

  1. No matter what apple do people will still flock to buy it I currently have the sgs3 and it’s great but feels way to plastic maybe that’s the only reason I might get too ohh well if u can’t beat em join em

  2. 1. Adapters compinsating for anticipated hardware incompatibilities is the kind of thing you expect included in box with every new piece of anything you buy. Apple’s just interested in cash.

    2. Why are we talking about this phone when people are dying and forced to work in abysmal conditions manufacturing them? Seriously. People are dying and being forced into conditions that at time cross the UN’s definition as slavery. People, start focusing on things that mater!

  3. True that… this is one of the biggest leap they’ve made ever since the upgrading process of iPhone 3…. I really hated to see everyone going “Oh I have to get This” everytime iphone’s out. But finally…. apple going for 16:9?!
