Part 1:
As the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) cites an unprecedented increase in the global warming rate caused by human activities, many citizens in Uganda have now found a new way of minimizing the bills they pay for electricity while reducing their carbon footprint, all with the help of a latrine.
It all began in Kansanga Primary School, located on the outskirts of Kampala city.
The primary school is the first among hundreds of schools in Uganda to take on bio-latrine technology as its main source of energy.
The bio-latrine differs from common pit latrines in terms of its usage and hygiene.
At a glance, the bio-latrine looks like a ventilated improved pit latrine but operates like a modern flushing toilet. It requires little amounts of water to push the waste into a 30-cubic-metre digester, where decomposition takes place.
The digester made out of concrete acts as the pit. It also produces gas which is dispatched through a plastic tube to the school kitchen where it is connected to a bio-gas stove.
