Women & Investigative Journalism: Dealing with Threats & Harassment
At a time when women journalists are faced with unprecedented levels of harassment online, and plentiful threats in the field, three veteran reporters will share their strategies for coping with such challenges. Included will be self-care tips in the face of traumatic intimidation.

Ying Chan – Founder & Honorary Professor, Journalism and Media Studies Centre, University of Hong Kong
Ying Chan is a writer, educator, and the founding director of the Journalism and Media Studies Centre, at Hong Kong University. She was also the founding dean (2003-2011) of the journalism school at Shantou University in China. Prior to joining HKU in 1998, Chan spent 23 years working as a journalist in New York City, where she reported for the New York Daily News, NBC News, and a number of Chinese language dailies. Chan’s honours include a Nieman Fellowship at Harvard University, a George Polk Award for journalistic excellence and an International Press Freedom Award by the Committee to Protect Journalists. She is the co-Public Lead of Creative Commons Hong Kong, a board member of the Media Development Investment Fund, an investment fund for independent media worldwide and a member of the World Economic Forum Global Agenda Council on Social media. She has edited six books on China's media.

Stella Paul – Environment & Development Journalist, Freelance
Stella Paul is an environmental and development journalist and media trainer who originally hails from the conflict-ridden region of northeast India. Stella independently reports for many leading global media outlets including Thomson Reuters and Inter Press Services. Stella has won several awards and fellowships for her journalism. These include the Asian Environmental Journalism Award 2015, 2014 and 2013, All India Environmental Journalism Award 2014, UNFPA Media Award for Gender Sensitive reporting 2012, the United Nations Global Issues Press Fellowship, Dart Center for Journalism and Trauma Fellowship and the National Media Award (India). She is also the winner of 2016 Courage in Journalism Award given by the International Women’s Media Foundation (IWMF) – the first Indian journalist to receive the award.
Bopha Phorn – Lecturer/ Freelance Journalist, Pannasastra University
Bopha Phorn is a freelance journalist based in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. Her work includes reports for the Voice of America Khmer service and as a lecturer in media at Pannasastra University. She worked for the Cambodia Daily from 2008 through 2014, and has covered economics, politics, corruption, crime, security, and the environment. She began her career at Deutsche Presse Agenteur. She was honored with the Courage In Journalism Award from the International Women's Media Foundation for her reporting on illegal logging, during which she was shot at by military police.
