There are only so many big billionaires, and those are the ones who actually choose the candidate. It sounds incredibly cynical, but in the U.S., this is very true. No grassroots candidates make it to the top without making big promises and being funded by special interest groups. The first step is often becoming a governor or congressperson. From there, they sell themselves to industry to accumulate a war chest of cash, usually around $1 billion, to fund a U.S. presidential race, at least half of which is spent on advertising. What could be worth spending $500 million on advertising over roughly 18 months? Pure finance would suggest multiples of that in return.
It ain’t the people who chose the candidate, it’s people with money that do it accordingly if they can own a piece of them.
