You could argue that the image was chosen because it allowed the Sun to use the ‘plane awful’ pun, and Saka was ill-advised to throw a paper plane back to the crowd. It made him an easy target. He did nothing in the game to warrant being vilified or scapegoated like he was after the Euro 2020 Final defeat to Italy. That said, it makes you wonder why the media weren’t more sensitive to that history when making this editorial decision. They provide a platform for racism that’s for damned sure.
