Tesla Shanghai Show:reporter in the charging station Electric car! new technology industry

US-BASED electric carmaker Tesla said yesterday it will build 400 charging stations for electric cars in China Unicom’s outlets in 120 cities nationwide in a new move to encourage widespread use of electric cars in China.

The country’s second biggest telco will provide space for construction and basic services in 120 cities while Tesla, based in Palo Alto, California, operates the stations. The two companies will also build 20 “supercharger stations” in 20 Chinese cities to offer high-speed charging this year.

Tesla, which started selling its flagship Model S sedan on the mainland in April, has also teamed up with Yintai, which runs commercial complexes in China, to deploy 40 parking and charging spots for car owners in over 30 of its real estate projects in Beijing, Hangzhou and Chengdu.

Tesla will also partner commercial property developer SOHO, Shanghai Daily said earlier.

In 2009 China called for annual sales of 500,000 electric cars by 2015 but have scaled back those plans. The country has about 78,000 electric vehicles, mostly public buses and taxies.

China has been promoting electric vehicles as one of the solutions to the country’s pollution problems, but the lack of charging infrastructure has hampered the effort.
