One of the most striking sides of the Syrian conflict has been the degree to which political actors have been able to sideline journalists in telling its story. The politicised narrative has proved so detached from reality that it blinded many reporters to the dangers of covering Syria, some of whom paid with their lives. To discuss this, Oksana is joined by Theo Padnos, an American freelance journalist who was held in captivity by al-Nusra for almost two years, and who was released with the help of Qatari negotiators.
