Although protest events make for dramatic news as they feature conflict visually — think Occupy Wall Street and Black Lives Matter — there is considerable research suggesting that news stories told about protest movements are frequently inaccurate and incomplete. Deep, nuanced understanding of what drives people to protest are often lost in personality-driven, sensationalized narratives. Through rigorous reporting and contextualized political analysis, the journalists at The Nation provide a challenge to conventional accounts of the social movements that are shaping our world.
For the first time, The Nation is bringing together the next generation of independent journalists in an intimate setting to learn more about social movements, their historic and contemporary impact on electoral politics, and how journalists can better cover them.
